6th Grade Social Studies

The 6th graders will be watch ing and discussing Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves the rest of the week.

5th Grade Social Studies

Yesterday the 5th graders had a JEL presentation on Anti - smoking and today they finished their "My Words" for Chapters 9 & 10. If they didn't finish them in class it is homework for tomorrow. There will be a test over The American Revolution on Wednesday, May 6th.

6th Grade Social Studies

Yesterday the 6th graders learned about the King Arthur legend, all the stories and figures that are associated with that and about Knights and knighthood. Today we covered Robin Hood and the stories and legends that surround him. Both of these stories started out as Oral traditions in the Middle Ages and are still popular today.

5th Grade Social Studies

Yesterday the 5th graders started reading section 2 of chapter 10, which covers the turning point of the American Revolution. They also took notes over the section in the form of pie chart notes. Today they finished those notes and finished reading that section.

6th Grade Social Studies

The 6th graders will be reading and filling out notes on 11:3 which discusses the role of the church in the Middle Ages.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders finished reading 10:1 on the strengths and weaknesses of the the colonial and british armies as well as George Washington's Military background. Their assignemt was to fill in a T - Table of the strengths and weaknesses of the two armies.

Today the 6th graders went over the notes to 11:2 and then started to read 11:3, which talked about the Roman Catholic church in the Middle Ages.

5th Grade Social Studies

The fifth graders started Chapter 10, on the American Revolution today. We Compared and Contrasted the Patriots to the Redcoats, and we took an in depth look at Washington's leadership skills.

6th Grade Social Studies

Yesterday the 6th graders worked on Lesson 2 of Chapter 11, it is about the Middle Ages, and what life was like for them. Today we discussed the main idea of every paragraph of that section and the homework is too fill in the notes of that section for Thursday.

Yesterday the 5th graders worked on their posters for the NIACC Entrepreneur for a Day program. Today NIACC was here as the first day of the Entrepreneur program.

The 5th graders finished watching the series, Liberty's Kids today and they have an extra credit chance by finding the poem "Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

6th Grade Social Studies

Last week the 6th graders did research in the library, in encyclopedias, on a Religion that they drew, they are finding out what the main principles are, how they practice their religion, and some other nuts and bolts type questions. This week they are in the computer lab. They are filling in the gaps that didn't fill with the encyclopedia and they are typing up their paper. The paper and poster will be due next thursday.

5th Grade Social Studies

Last week the 5th graders finished up their mini unit on Maps and Graphs. We have know started on the American Revolution. We have discussed what led to the Revolution, (Taxes, Armed British troops in the colonies, The Boston Massacre, and yesterday way were introduced to the Paul Revere's Ride and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. For the next few days we will be watching a video from PBS on streaming video called "Liberty's Kids". It follows the adventures of the three "kids" as they encounter the events around the American Revolution.

For the past week and half or so I have not been able to sign on to blogger.com my password wasn't working so I'm sorry about the gap in the days. I have changed my password and it seems to be working, at least I got on today! Hopefully there will not be any more problems!

The sixth graders learned about Sikhism, Zoraosters, and Judaism today in the World Religions Video. The sixth graders can correct their test as extra credit for Friday.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders did a worksheet on maps and on measuring distance on maps using scale. If the worksheet was not finished in class then it is homework.

The 6th graders continued their video, today the learned about the Jain, who refuse to harm any living thing and then we learned about Muslims or the Nation of Islam.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders continued to work on Map and graph skills. We corrected our Map worksheets and then we worked on using scale to measure distances.

The 6th graders started their unit on World Religions today. We will be starting on the Eastern Religions of Hindu and Buddhists. We will be watching a video on them today and on Monday.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders learned about the different types of maps today, political, physical, elevation, etc. Then we worked on how to find things on a map using Latitude and Longitude.

6th Grade Social Studies

Today the 6th graders took their test on Rome. It was the hardest test they have taken so far. It will challenge them, from now on tests will be harder. I want to reinenforce better study habits, I am afraid they are starting to confuse studying with craming.

5th Grade Social Studies

Today the 5th graders started a little mini unit on maps and graphs. For the next 3-4 days we will be talking about maps and graphs. Today we will talk about Latitude and Longitude Lines, Map Keys, Directions, Scale on Maps and how to read a map in general.

The 6th graders will be working on their scrapbooks today in class. The computer work should be done, so today is a day to start to paste everything together. The scrapbook will be due on Thursday same day as their test over Ancient Rome. They should be going through their notes, paying special attention to the things that are in their scrapbook.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders played a review game in their preparation for their test over the colonies on Wednesday. The test will cover the 13 colonies, Slavery, Indentured Servitude, Ben Franklin, and the Salem Witch Trials.

2008 - 2009 West Fork Boys Basketball

Congrats to Boys Basketball team on a wonderful season. They did us proud, and we'll miss all the seniors that will be gone after this year.

6th Grade Social Studies

The sixth graders have been in the computer lab all week and will be in the computer lab again today. They are typing up their scrapbook entries and finding pics, and making headers for each page. They are a lot of work and they are doing a great job!

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th graders worked in the computer lab on their essays on Wednesday and yesterday they started to put together their scrapbooks and turned in their essays on Ben Franklin. Today they will be working on their scrapbooks again. They will be due on Tuesday next week.

The 6th graders started to read and take notes over Chapter 7 Lesson 4 today, over the Birth of Christianity and the Conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity. This will be the last section of the Roman Empire. No Homework!

5th Grade Social Studies

Today the 5th graders listed everything that they knew about Ben Franklin, we then started to put these facts into four categories; Early Life, Philadelphia, Science/Inventions, and Government/Politics. This will be used to write an essay on Ben Franklin later. There was no homework!

The 6th graders will start their final video of the The Roman Era, there are a lot of videos in this section, but I think they do a good job of showing the kids different aspects of the Romans.

5th Grade Social Studies

Today the 5th graders acted out a play on the Salem Witch Trials, they played parts of accused witches, the accusing girls and the judges. Unfortunatly, there were not parts for everyone and those that were not one of those parts were jury members and audience members.

The sixth graders turned in their essays on Julius Caesar to start class and then we learned more about the Roman Army. Their tactics, weapons, motivations and accomplishments.

5th Grade Social Studies

The fifth graders turned in their homework of Word Murals at the beginning of class and then we had an opening discussion on the Salem Witch Trials, what happened and why. We will be discussing this for a couple of days, so you may hear some things about "witches" from your students.

The 6th graders finished their video on Julius Caesar and their homework will be to write an essay on the figure of Julius Caesar. We filled in a four quadrant paper on what we knew about him as a class. They should use that as they write their essay.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th Graders started reading Lesson 3 on slavery in the colonies today. If they don't get done it will be homework. For homework this weekend they will have to complete a word mural with the 13 colonies in it. They can also do extra credit by doing research and bringing info. on Monday about the Salem Witch Trials.

The 6th graders will finish their notes on Lesson 3 of Chapter 7 today. These notes are still on the transition of Rome from a Republic to an Empire. 6C may start a video on Julius Caesar today, if there is time, the 12:30 dismissal, may cause problems.

5th Grade Social Studies

Today the 5th graders will be reading Lesson 2 of Chapter 7. This lesson deals with daily life in the colonies. It will have what their life is like in the cities as well as on the farms. It will also talk about the first period of westward expansion, to the Appalacian Mountains. Because of the 12:30 dismaissal, we may not finish and to finish the reading may be homework for some of the classses.

Today the 6th graders should wrap up Lesson 3 of Chapter 7 or get close to it, we should wrap up the Roman Empire reading, and tomorrow should be ready for the story of the Roman Army.

5th Grade Social Studies

The 5th Graders will start reading Chapter 7 on life in the colonies today. Today we will find out what many of their motivations were for coming to the New World. Tomorrow the papers and the presentations will be due over their colony.

6th Grade Social Studies

The 6th graders have started reading and taking notes over Lesson 3 of Chapter 7. This lesson is over the creation of the Roman Empire and how it changed from the Roman Republic. We will be talking about Julius Caesar, gladiators and how it can be compared to the United States. Have a great weekend.

Yesterday the 5th graders typed in the computer lab. Today we sre going to prep for Chapter 7, about life in the colonies. As you know they earned no homework Thursday and today so the papers and presentations that they were going to give and turn in today will now be turned in on Tuesday next week! Way to Go Mr. Sheriff!

Mr. Sheriff earned his 200th career victory as a Girl's Varsity Basketball Coach. It is quite an achievement and be sure to tell him congrats when you see him!!

Way to go West Fork Middle School!!! The middle school has raised almost $1000 dollars for the Sasse family in the last two days. They also earned no homework on Thursday and Friday!! Way to go Guys!!!!

6th Grade Social Studies

6A and 6B will start lesson three in chapter 7 today. That will cover The Roman Republic becoming The Roman Empire. That means learning about Julius Caeser and Octavian. The kids should find that interesting, you know conspiracies, murder, and war. 6C started it yesterday. They will do more with it today.

Devlynn Sasse

As you may already know Devlynn Sasse, a fifth grader here at West Fork, and his family lost their home to a fire this weekend. We will be doing fundraisers to help them out. Today we dressed in Red to show how much we care for Devlynn and his family. Red is the color of Caring according to Character Counts! Tomorrow the students may be able to earn a day off from homework if 75% of them bring a $1 donation. Friday if the students want to wear a hat in school, they can for a $1 donation. I also encourage you to leave a blog for the Sasse family. Please leave kind words, word of support or inspiration and we will be sure to pass it along to them.

6th Grade Social Studies

The sixth graders finished their lesson one notes yesterday, and started their notes on lesson two. I was happy to see that they seem to see a difference in the way they used to take notes compared to the ones they just took. They also seemed to universally say that these new notes were better and easier to use.

5th Grade Social Studies

Today the 5th graders stared doing their research on their colony, they didn't like it at first, because we are not using the computers or the internet to do the research, they are using books and encyclopedias. It fun to see them actually use books, and read the info, instead of point and click.

6th Grade Social Studies

The sixth graders have read the first two lessons in Chapter 7 on Ancient Rome, last week (what there was of it) we started to learn how to break down a lesson and read for content as well as how to take good notes from it. Today we continue this process of how to get the information from what we read. This is a skill I hope will help them in the future!

Along with our usual day events we also took time out today to watch the inauguaration of Barack Obama as our next, and 44th, President. It is a very historical day!

The 6th graders are currently learning about Ancient Rome! We will be doing studies on The Republic, the Empire and the Fall of Rome.

The 5th graders are studing the colonies right now. We just introduced all 13 of the original colonies. This week we will start doing more in depth learning on the 13 colonies, and learning more about their daily life.
